TeenTech is a series of one-day events for schools which aim to inspire teenagers to follow careers in STEM (science, technology, engineering and maths) subjects. Since May Dad, myself and/or various members of TVRRUG have taken along our RepRaps to several of these events around the country and put on a short activity for the students to customise and print the word “RepRap”. We try to demonstrate that not only is technology fun and amazing, but also attainable – you don’t need to be part of a massive company and spend lots of money to get involved, and it is possible to build incredible technology yourself. It’s hard to believe that it has been over a month since our eagerly awaited “Introduction to 3D Printing” weekend at South Hill Park, and we’re still basking in the after-glow of a successful event (if I may say so myself).
The excitement began with the preparation when in the week before the event we were down to zero working printers. The Sanguinololu electronics on our trusty old workhorse Prusa had given up the ghost yet again with the heated bed, and the second machine (the TVRRUG demo) was yet to be calibrated. Fixing the Sanguinololu took us down to the wire, which left the Saturday morning while 3D masterpieces were being designed for me to get the second machine up and running.

We met Martin Franklin, Digital Media Manager for South Hill Park Arts Centre, at Reading Geek Night and he expressed an interested in hosting our Build Party. Fast forward a few months and with his help we have teamed up with digital artist Riette Hayes-Davies to give a weekend course on 3D design for 3D Printing at South Hill Park on the first weekend of March.
Riette is a Google SketchUp Pro and will be teaching the basics, and we will be talking about 3D printing and printing out the fruits of the weekend’s labour.

Just about recovered from Saturday’s revelry, and what a great time we had! The atmosphere was really open and friendly, and the interest in our Mendel was evident from the moment we got it out of the car. Some had never seen a 3D printer and some had already completed their own, but whatever the level of familiarity reactions were almost entirely positive.
We gave away lots of OSHW logos that we’d printed out and attached to business cards with a paperclip. Some of our example prints in particular attracted a lot of attention e.g. Martijn’s Tornado, the 3D Printed Roller Bearing, and perhaps unsurprisingly being an open source event, the head of the Android mascot. Dad and I ventured along to our first Reading Geek Night a in April and decided there and then that we wanted to demonstrate our RepRaps and share our experiences, booking ourselves in at the first opportunity with great anticipation. That night was tonight and the response was amazing, there was a definite buzz in the room (not just from the printer).
